LED (Light Emitting Diode), also known as a light-emitting diode, is a type of solid-state semiconductor device that can directly convert electricity into light.
Since the birth of the white LED in 1996, the history of light has further accelerated its evolution.
The history of lamp development
Looking back at the history of lamp development, since the advent of gas lamps in the 1810s, there has been a great invention approximately every 60 years. The incandescent lamp was invented in 1879, the fluorescent lamp, which is also common today, was introduced in 1938, and then in 1996, the prototype of current LED lighting—the white LED—was born.
Looking back at the history of LEDs, deep red and yellow-green LEDs were developed in the 1960s, initially used for display purposes. The turning point in development was the invention of the blue LED in 1993, which led to the development of the white LED in 1996. In just over a decade, white LEDs have reached and surpassed the efficiency level of fluorescent lamps, saving over 60% energy and having a lifespan far exceeding that of energy-saving lamps, reaching 50,000 hours. LEDs have officially become the fourth generation of light.
The future of LEDs is bright.
In chronological order, Australia, Canada, Taiwan, Japan, the United States, EU countries, and South Korea have all stopped using incandescent lamps, fully promoting energy-saving lamps and LED lamps to achieve energy conservation and emission reduction plans. The National Development and Reform Commission has stated that China plans to completely ban incandescent lamps within ten years and promote and popularize LED lighting in more than 20 large and medium-sized cities during the 12th Five-Year Plan.
With the rapid advancement of LED technology, LEDs have been widely promoted and applied globally, from the initial device indicator lights to the current widespread use in display screens, electrical screens, lighting fixtures, traffic signals, and lighting projects in various fields.
