1. Establishment of Smart Lighting Trends
1. Manufacturers are competing to launch new smart lighting products
Smart lighting refers to a distributed wireless telemetry, remote control, and remote communication control system composed of technologies such as computer, wireless communication data transmission, spread spectrum power line carrier communication technology, intelligent information processing, and energy-saving electrical control, to achieve intelligent control of lighting equipment. It features functions such as brightness adjustment, soft start, timing control, and scene setting, achieving safety, energy saving, comfort, and efficiency.
From recent market trends, smart lighting has become a new product that manufacturers like Philips are eager to promote. At the beginning of the year at the Frankfurt Fair and the recently concluded Guangzhou Lighting Fair, smart lighting was also a hot topic of discussion. The trend of smart lighting has been established.
2. The market is in its infancy, and it is expected to enter a rapid development period in the next 1-2 years.
Traditional lighting systems are controlled manually to adjust lighting needs. The basic principle of smart lighting systems is that users issue commands to terminal modules (including mobile terminals), transmitting signals to control center software through electronic sensing, and adjusting the voltage and current amplitude of the circuit via controllers, thereby regulating the intensity and color of the light source. The entire system can be divided into several products, including smart lighting control systems, digitally addressable LED drivers, fixtures, and light sources.
A typical smart lighting system completes the transmission of data commands from the input end to the output end. Users can transmit data to the main controller (gateway) through various input methods (control software, sensors, smart sockets, etc.), and then the main controller controls the output end (LED downlights, LED panel lights) through network protocols such as ZigBee.
The current state of smart lighting platforms is fragmented, with no unified standard platform. Due to the lack of unified product standards, the various parts of existing smart lighting systems, from control platforms and control protocols to light source products, present a decentralized and fragmented market. For example, there are currently several control protocols on the market, including WIFI, Bluetooth, ZigBee, and NFC, and control platforms also include options like iOS and Android.
Lighting manufacturers are betting on ZigBee. Currently, many major lighting manufacturers have begun to launch their own smart lighting products, and ZigBee has won the favor of most major lighting manufacturers due to its advantages of low power consumption, low cost, and safety, becoming the network protocol used in their new products. Major manufacturers such as GE, Philips, Osram, and Toshiba have formed alliances to promote the ZigBee protocol, which is expected to become a universal standard in the future.
In the early stages of market development, the lack of standards has caused confusion and hesitation among manufacturers. If ZigBee becomes the industry standard, it will alleviate manufacturers' concerns to a certain extent. However, the diversity of control platforms and product forms can still provide sufficient design freedom. At that time, the industry will present a flourishing scene, with various manufacturers increasing their promotional efforts, and the market is expected to enter a rapid development period in the next 1-2 years.
3. Smart Lighting Opens Up Long-Term Growth Space for the Industry
Regarding the sustainability of growth in the LED industry, the market's disputes mainly come from the following points: 1) How long can the replacement market support rapid development of the industry? 2) Do LED lamps have a long lifespan? 3) After the rapid replacement period, where will the growth momentum of the industry come from?
Regarding the first question, data from the U.S. Department of Energy shows that the penetration rate of LED lighting in the U.S. market was still less than 5% in 2013. Assuming the penetration rate doubles each year, the replacement demand can be sustained for 3-4 years. As for the lifespan of LED lighting, we believe that during the rapid development period of LED lighting, long lifespan is not the most important factor for manufacturers, but rather minimizing costs while meeting lifespan standards (20,000-30,000 hours). Moreover, after the industry matures, manufacturers will not go to great lengths to maximize product lifespan.
Finally, LED smart lighting will enhance the ASP and added value of products, and its growth potential is much greater than that of traditional lighting products, solving the long-term growth momentum after the rapid replacement period.
According to market research, the cost of an LED driver with smart control functions generally does not exceed 10 yuan, while the factory price of lighting fixtures equipped with such drivers is 20%-30% higher than that of ordinary fixtures. This single smart configuration can add at least 20% premium to ordinary lighting products (and this does not consider additional more complex systems and higher-end configurations).
Referring to CSA's statistics and forecasts on the market size of general LED lighting from 2009 to 2015, while conservatively assuming a 20% premium for smart lighting products, the new market space brought by smart lighting to the industry in 2014 and 2015 is approximately 26 billion yuan and 36 billion yuan, respectively.
According to this calculation, without considering high-value-added products, the smart lighting industry will provide at least an additional market space of over 60 billion yuan in the two years of 2014-2015. If calculated at a 30% annual compound growth rate, it is conservatively estimated that by 2018 this figure will reach nearly 80 billion yuan, with a cumulative amount exceeding 200 billion yuan within five years.
4. Investment Strategy
The establishment of smart lighting trends will open up broader growth space for the LED industry. Smart lighting is expected to enter a rapid development period in the next 1-2 years, and it is recommended to layout the LED smart lighting sector, focusing on the following main lines:
1) In the era of smart lighting, solution providers have the greatest say, with Philips and others having obvious advantages. Manufacturers closely cooperating with them will benefit, such as Sunshine, Fozhao, etc.;
2) Among local lighting manufacturers, those with significant brand influence have the greatest potential to transform into solution providers, focusing on NVC, Dehao, Sunshine, Op, Fozhao, Sanan, etc.;
3) The smart lighting market is more specialized and requires strong technical and service team support, highlighting the value of engineering channels, focusing on NVC, Dehao, etc.;
4) Companies like Tuobang, Heertai, and Maoshuo Power Supply also have considerable flexibility.
Smart lighting has rich functions and enormous added value.
The essence of smart lighting is electronic and networked, which can not only achieve intelligent control of lighting systems but also serve as an entry point for the Internet, thereby deriving more high-value-added services, such as health management, map positioning, product guidance, and advertising, etc.
1) Scene Lighting
Smart lighting systems can automatically adjust the intensity and color of light in a room based on the user's light environment and personal preferences. For example, when the outdoor weather is good and the sunlight is strong, the system will automatically dim the light to save energy; when the outdoor is overcast and the sunlight is dim, the system will automatically brighten the light to meet the user's lighting needs.
In recent years, with the development of smart terminals and concepts, users can even directly adjust the lighting on their smartphones.
2) LED Optical Communication
Visible Light Communication (VLC) is a technology that major companies are currently intensively researching. It utilizes LED lighting technology to achieve data transmission by adjusting the visible light frequency, thus achieving data communication. In smart lighting, system control is mainly completed digitally, making LED visible light communication easier to implement.
3) Healthy Lighting
Creating a better light environment is also one of the goals of smart lighting. As issues like "light pollution and light radiation" are gradually gaining attention, creating a healthy lighting environment has become the most effective solution in this regard. Future smart lighting systems will be able to reshape the light environment according to human needs while simultaneously reducing negative effects such as flicker, allowing for close integration with health care.
4) Other Derivative Value-Added Services
Based on automatic adjustment and LED light communication functions, smart lighting systems, as an entry point to the Internet, can also bring more value-added features. These include map positioning, integration with home and terminal sensors, and health monitoring.
